Prayers for Our Baby

I don't know where to start this post, so I'll start at the beginning.  We had a regular OB appointment and ultrasound on September 15th.  We decided at our appointment to get the AFP screening.  This is something we've done with all our babies, not that the results of this screening would change our hearts about our pregnancy, but so we are prepared if God ever sent us a curve ball.

After that appointment I got a call that our AFP screening came back with a risk of Down Syndrome.  I was not too concerned because I know this test can be commonly inaccurate.  The Dr. told me that it was completely optional for me to see a specialist & to get further evaluated.  Jade & I decided that yes we wanted to talk to the specialist.  They told us we would meet the Dr. and get a level 2 ultrasound.

Yesterday we met with the specialist & we had a very detailed ultrasound.  The doctor was very nice, and covered everything with us.  She told us that our initial blood results gave us a 1 in 30 chance for having a baby with Down Syndrome.  We first thought those odds aren't that bad.  Then, she told us that a normal woman my age has odds somewhere around 1 in 850.  I can't remember the exact number because there was a lot going on in my head at that moment.  During the ultrasound they look for "soft markers" for Down Syndrome.  We found out that our baby has 3 of 7 soft markers.  The first marker showed that our baby is missing the nose bridge bone.  The second marker showed that our baby is missing a bone in it's pinkie finger.  The third marker happens in 3-4% of normal babies and is a bright spot on our babies heart.  The bright spot isn't anything to worry about but it's a common marker in Down Syndrome babies.

Profile of Baby Ollie 10-4-10

Our next option was to get an amnio for a yes / no answer.  With this came a risk of 1 in 500 that she could break my water, causing us to lose the baby.  To Jade & I this isn't worth the risk to have a yes / no answer to if our baby has Downs.  Down Syndrome isn't what we wished for our child, but it's definitely something that we can handle if it is God's plan for our family.  We will have to wait until we meet our baby to know if our baby has Downs.  Our Dr. said she highly suspects that he or she does have Downs & we are OK with this news.

The bad news came after all of the talk above.  Right now there is an opening between our babies two ventricles.  We go back in 3 weeks for another ultrasound of the heart to see if the hole is still there or if it grows shut.  Today I'm 20 weeks 2 days pregnant & around 22 weeks is the best time to really look over the heart in an ultrasound.  Right now we don't know what will happen.  If our baby still has a hole in his or her heart, that means we most likely will deliver at a hospital much larger than Champaign - I'm guessing that means St. Louis, Chicago, or Indy and surgery of some sort.

So right now I'm calling on all of you for prayers.  I pray that God does heal our baby before we meet so none of my fears come to reality.  Of all things I hate to tell my other two children any bad news about the baby they are so excited for.  So please pray hard for our family, and put us on any prayer chains you are a part of. I realize that our babies heart may not heal itself before we meet.  In that case I also want to pray in advance for all the doctors and nurses that we may meet, and for our family during this time.

Jade & I are doing OK.  We have each other to lean on, and we're very thankful that we have the marriage that we do.  God has blessed us beyond measures in that respect.  We also have amazing parents to stand by our sides, two beautiful and healthy babies we adore, and a huge support system with close family and wonderful friends.  My parents personally know the heartache and every emotion we are feeling, and that helps to know that someone that loves you so much knows exactly what you are feeling without even talking about it.

Thank you all in advance for all the prayers & support!  After our next appointment with the specialist we will update you.

Jade & Annie

*Added 10-6-10 -  There have been some stories swirling town that our baby will not make it until birth.  This is 100% not true.  Our doctor has not once said these words to us.  As of now our doctor led us to believe that our baby may need heart surgery.  However, this will be determined at our next appointment & detailed ultrasound, and probably closely monitored the rest of my pregnancy.  Right now this is what she suspects based on our last ultrasound*

*Added 10-7-10 - WOW - I am speechless.  The prayers and support from people I have never met is overwhelming.  My husband and I can tell your prayers ARE working.  We are doing well & are very excited to meet Ollie in the future.  With your prayers we are finding encouragement in other websites & resources - thank you all for the prayers & your time you spending thinking of us!*

  2. Praying for you! This is a link to the blog of a dear friend of mine. Her story sounds quite similar to yours. Eliana does have Down Syndrome and she did require heart surgery but she's a happy beautiful joyful little girl. I am sure Leslie would be willing to talk to you if you have any questions.

  4. Hi,

I'm Sheri's friend. I have a precious little girl with Down syndrome. She was also born with 2 large holes in her heart which required surgery at 4 months of age. All of this was a surprise to me at her birth.

Today, she is a happy, healthy, delightful little girl! I couldn't imagine our lives without her as she brings much joy and love into our days.

God is with you and I'm thankful you have placed your faith in Him. He is the giver of good things. If you ever want to talk or have questions, please feel free to contact me. Praying now for your family and your precious little one.

    Blessings

  5. Dear Annie,
Your post brought me to tears this morning as I sat reading it. I will pray for your precious little one. I do know that we serve a loving God and though we don't always understand everything we choose to trust Him. Have you been following bowensheart.com? They have the most amazing faith and they have been journaling they journey since Bowen's birth three weeks ago. They have been on a roller coaster ride for sure but God has shown Himself to them in amazing ways.

Please know I am here for you and you can count on my prayers for sure:)

I will be hoping and praying for healing for your new little one, comfort and strength for you and Jade, and peace and unity for your family as a whole. I hope and pray in Yeshua Jesus' name that the hole in your child's heart will disappear and be filled with His love, and your medical bills will be handled so well, that they will never be a burden to you!

  42. Dear Annie,

You and your family are beautiful. Your love is beautiful; your trust is beautiful. I will be praying for overwhelming grace. In the church in which I grew up, I saw one "almost certainly DS" baby born without, and I've seen DS children as loving and loved members of our "church family." As a "miracle baby" myself, I know I need to always remind myself not to underestimate our loving Heavenly Father. This is today's collect in the Book of Common Prayer; I hope you find it as beautiful as I do:

Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

My little brother has Downs Syndrome (I say little, but he's 25 now!) and having him as a part of my life has been one of my biggest blessings. We also know a Downs girl in my church who had the heart problems you're describing and she also just turned 25, has a job, graduated from high school, and lives a full, productive life. There will be storms but I know you know that God will use it all as blessings! Keep trusting in Him and know that there are people praying for you and loving you!

  56. Kaelah a member of itstartswith.us shared the news of your precious miracle that you are carrying. When I was in college I read 'Angel Unaware' written by Dale Evans (Rogers) - Roy Rogers wife. They had a down-syndrome baby. I don't recommend the read for you at this time, but just wanted to share that it opened my eyes to the fact that God only chooses very special people to bless with these very special children. You and Jade must be the cream of the crop. I know that your heart must ache for yourself, but mostly for your unborn blessing... even though I know you trust greatly in our God... because in the end, you are only human with a tender heart. Just know that you will be in my thoughts even though we don't know each other - you are amazing and your faith is inspiring. Lewelen

    Psalm 139:13-18
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous - how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!

    My face may be different

    But my feelings the same

    I laugh and I cry

And I take pride in my gains

I was sent here among you

    To teach you to love

    As God in the heavens

    Looks down from above

    To Him I'm no different

    His love knows no bounds

    It's those here among you

    In cities and towns

    That judge me by standards

    That man has imparted

    But this family I've chosen

    Will help me get started

For I'm one of the children

    So special and few

    That came here to learn

    The same lessons as you

    That love is acceptance

It must come from the heart

We all have the same purpose

    Though not the same start

    The Lord gave me life

    To live and embrace

And I'll do it as you do

    But at my own pace

  65. Dear Annie,

Your story is so touching. I pray for strength and peace of mind for you and your family during this time of uncertainty. Sometimes our words to God are the only things that have the ability to calm those anxious butterflies when we're faced with not knowing.

My prayers and positive thoughts are with you and your family.

    Serenity Prayer
    God grant me the serenity
    to accept the things I cannot change;
    courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

    Living one day at a time;
    Enjoying one moment at a time;
    Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
    as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
    if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
    and supremely happy with Him
    Forever in the next.
    Amen.

  69. Sending so much love and many, many prayers your way. I watched a video of a speech from Gianna Jessen, an abortion survivor with cerebral palsy, not long ago. She said some things that really stuck with me, and I want to share them with you.

"There are things that you will only be able to learn by the weakest among us. What arrogance that the stronger should dominate the weaker. Don't you realize that you cannot make your own heart beat?... I am weaker than most of you, but this is my sermon. And what a small price to pay to be able to blaze through the world as I do & offer hope. I think in our misunderstanding of how things work, we misunderstand how beautiful suffering can be. I don't willingly sign up for it. But when it comes, we forget that God is in control, and God has a way of making the most miserable thing beautiful."

    Stay faithful. He's in control.

  80. Dear Annie,
I've come across your blog and felt sad at first as I read your last post. But later on when I browsed your other posts I got amazed by the story and life of the two of you. Even just a few-minute reading was enough. You both are so loving, beautiful and just TRUE people that whatever's coming your way will only make you stronger and will teach you something new about this life. I understand your worries but it's wonderful to see you being strong, positive and optimistic about the future! There are so many stories that I've heard about when the doctors guaranteed something to their patients and then were surprised by "miracles" that happened. There IS what we call "miracle" in this life. I'm being honest, even just reading your story I felt you're living in this miracle. I believe you're right about seeing what it brings. There are some things we can plan, and others that we just have to embrace. God gives us just as much as we can bear, to let us discover something new and deep about this life. Be it sad or happy things, I'm sure you are wise and sensitive enough to perceive the hidden meaning of them. I'm wishing you that same strength, wisdom and beauty that you already have! Everything that happens, happens the best way for us. It's that sometimes we don't know what we really need at the moment. I know that one day you will look back and smile.
    May you all be blessed!

  96. Jade and Annie,
Our 7 year old daughter was born with two holes in her heart and she was missing a chamber. At 18 months she had her first surgery. At 3 she received her second surgery to correct scar tissue under her aeorta and correct her leaking mitral valve. At 6 she had her third surgery to again correct her leaking mitral valve. Please know it is a scary road that we must travel but with modern day medical science and technology it's a blessing to know that CHD babies have a chance to live a completely normal life. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you at this difficult time of your journey.

  105. Bruce Carroll Sometimes Miracles Hide:

They were so excited it was coming to be, two people so in love
and now soon there would be three, for many years they planned it.
Now soon it would be true, She was picking out the pink clothes, he was
    looking at the blue.
The call came unexpected the doctor had bad news, Some tests came back
and things weren't right, said you're gonna have to choose,
"I'll wait a week for your decision" and then the words cut like a
    knife ,
"I'm sure everyone will understand if you want to end its life".
Though they were badly shaken they just had no choice,
Because they knew God creates no accidents and they were sure they
    heard His voice Sayin'.
    (chorus)
sometimes miracles hide, and God will wrap some blessings in disguise
and you may have to wait this lifetime
to see the reasons with your eyes, cause sometimes miracles hide
It seemed before they knew it the appointed day arrived,
with eager apprehension they could barely hold inside,
The first time they laid eyes on her confirmed the doctors fears
but they held onto God promise they were sure they both could hear.
    (chorus)
Though she was not like the other girls they thought she was the best,
and through all the years of struggle neither whispered one regret.
And the first day that she started school and took her first bus ride,
they'd remembered the words that God had spoke and they both broke down
    and cried.
You see to them it did not matter why some things in life take place,
cause they just knew the joy they felt when they'd look into her face.
They learned that sometimes miracles hide,
they said God Has wrapped our blessing in disguise and
we may have to wait this lifetime to see the reasons with our eyes,
we know sometimes miracles hide. We've learned sometimes miracles

  146. Hi Annie,

Like others, I also stumbled over your blog today. It did touch my heart . I can only imagine how hard it is for your family right now, especially you because you are carrying the baby.
My brother's first son (my first nephew) was born June 05 this year and we all didn't know he had down syndrome until about a few days after he was born and it really was hard for us. They didn't detect it in my sis in laws pregnancy & to top it off he had to have surgery on his kidneys a week later. It was hard, but honestly, I love him to death! After all this, I wouldn't want him any other way.
I think God only gives those special children to people he knows that will love him. I can just take one look at your family photo and see so much love and care.

I am praying for you and your family and of course your little one. Hang in there and always have hope.

    much love xo

I will pray that your baby arrives without complications, but also that if it does arrive with Downs Syndrome or heart problems that God will give you the strength to handle it. They say that God only gives special children to special parents. I believe it. I wish all the best for your family in this crazy whirlwind pregnancy. Ollie, we already know, will turn out to be a fabulous child, and in time, a fabulous adult, all because of his excellent, nuturing parents.

  171. Just letting you know that your beautiful family are in my thoughts, as well as the thoughts of hundreds of other people. Your kids are lucky to have such courageous and inspiring parents.

  172. I can't honestly pray for you - I don't believe in a God - but I can offer this:

I know that there are thousands of examples of babies who have been born with heart defects, who have received surgery and lived wonderful, full lives. And I fully believe that yours will soon be one of them.

As to the Down Syndrome, I have a story. I went to public middle school, and it was a rough place. There were a lot of fights, and gossiping, and putting people down. But almost every day, all of the "cool" kids (and those quotes only indicate my dislike of the measurement, not it's reality) would make a point of talking to the boy with Down Syndrome in our grade - his name was Alex, and his aide's name was Mike. Alex would always have some alternate activity to do in gym, but those same kids always went to play catch with him. There is a wonderful human kindness in the world. I have faith that however your baby is born, he or she will be loved and cared for, not only by you, but by the world at large.

You and your baby have all my best thoughts and wishes.

  174. Hey Annie (and Jade and family), I'm praying for you and your family during this time. One of the hardest things in the world is to handle the illness of a child, and to see the measure of grace and dignity you already show is a blessing. I know that no matter what happens, little Ollie will be in loving hands. God's peace upon you all.

    Much love.

  175. I'm new to blogs but NOT new to prayer! God is good and nothing is beyond Him. My prayers are with you and Baby Ollie!

  176. Dear Annie,

Keep strong; my prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family. Down Sydrome diagnoses are often inaccurate, as you said. I was also born with a hole in my heart, and lived with it for several years until it finally closed up on its own. Remember you have your family to lean on, and that they all love you =)

Best of luck for the pregnancy and delivery of a healthy baby. I know Ollie will be in the arms of a loving family.

    All the best,
    Michiko Usagi xxx

  177. Dear Annie,

I know that yours and Jade's strength and courage will carry you both through all this, and there will be a rainbow at the end of this long, dark tunnel.

Lots of love from the other end of the world,
    Grace

  178. Dear Annie,

Although we don't know each other (and I'm a little later than everyone else =]), I'll be praying for your baby. I hope everything goes well, and God bless!

  179. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time. You are such a strong woman and mother already, you'll do beautifully through the rest of this pregnancy, I'm sure. Keep your chin up, think positive and know you're loved and cared for by many. God plans everything for a reason and the plan and purpose will be revealed in time. Stay strong and faithful! You're so amazing!

  181. Dear Annie, Jade & family.
I will be keeping all of you (and all the doctors and nurses helping you) in my prayers. The faith and love that you have is so beautiful and inspiring. May God continue to bless you all. xx

(I stumbled upon your blog earlier in the year and loved it but then lost it-fate & God has intervened though!)

  182. It takes a strong family for God to give this kind of challenge. It sounds like your family is just the place for this special little spirit. My prayers go out: that you, as a mother, will have increased intuition to know what is best; that your doctors and nurses will have the knowledge and skill necessary and that your tiny baby will be able to grow and develop the way that he or she should.

  183. I have been through a similar situation. I wanted to let you know that he is a healthy wonderful 5 year old. I had a AFP done then and it came back 1:18 for Trisomy 18 (which is non compatible with life). I ended up choosing the amnio because of my anxiety level although we had decided to lay it in God's hands. There would be no way we would terminate and take his life from him. The amnio came back fine. I have never done an AFP test since.

Prayers going out to your family. I hope the next Ultrasound gives you a positive report and the baby will not need surgery.

    Best wishes,
    Connie

  187. God has chosen such a special person in you to live this. He has huge hands and a forever caring spirit, esp. when it comes to mommies and their babies. I pray many blessings for you and your family, dear Annie.

  188. Annie,

I will keep you in my prayers. Several years ago I went through a similar situation and my parents had a child (their 6th!) with Downs Syndrome. He is 7 years old now, and is truly a gift and the most loving child I have ever met. I wish you will and will pray for you.

    Best wishes,

    Justin

  189. I am so sorry for your struggle and while I cannot imagine what you are going through, I am thinking of you and asking God to grant you strength, courage and the ability to keep putting one foot in front of the other. To keep love in your heart, laughter on your lips and a warm embrace in your arms. My hopes and prayers go out to you, your baby, your family and your loved ones.

  196. Dearest Annie!

I am the oldest [and only girl] with 8 brothers. 4 who were born with autism. 2 high functioning and 2 who will eternally be children. Now I know autism is different then downs syndrome but the fact remains they are both "handicaps" it was hard for my parents when my brother liam was born he was the first with autism, then then carter came and i saw them struggle more, by the time braxton and parker came i thought our family would fall apart with stress but instead we all blossomed with love and joy as we see these beautiful boys endure, explore and grow through their struggles.

no matter what happens you will have a beautiful new child come into your family, and it will be hard, and it will be an adjustment but they will bring so much joy and so much love into your lives and seeing them grow and experiencing a new view of the world through them will open your heart and enhance your life so much more.

i hope your child is born healthy with or without downs. im sure they will be beautiful and will contribute a lot to your lives and to this world!

    love and prayers.

  197. Hi Annie and Jade, i just read your post and my first feeling was empathy for your feelings of worryness and anguish, and the strong determination to pray for your beautiful baby and his awesome family who expect him with so much love. But by the end of your post another feeling came, and it was of intense joy because of your peace and strenght as a family that is grateful and confident even in this moment.
I have faith in you as parents and family, that you´ll be able to overcome with love and joy anything that happens, but i also believe in the power of prayers and good intentions and with love i´ll be praying for you and thinking in you so Ollie be born healthy and perfect as he already is, i´ll pray for his heart to be healed completely and for you to keep on being such a strong and lovely family.
Infinite blessings to you all, always <3
