Prayers for Our Baby

I don't know where to start this post, so I'll start at the beginning.  We had a regular OB appointment and ultrasound on September 15th.  We decided at our appointment to get the AFP screening.  This is something we've done with all our babies, not that the results of this screening would change our hearts about our pregnancy, but so we are prepared if God ever sent us a curve ball.

After that appointment I got a call that our AFP screening came back with a risk of Down Syndrome.  I was not too concerned because I know this test can be commonly inaccurate.  The Dr. told me that it was completely optional for me to see a specialist & to get further evaluated.  Jade & I decided that yes we wanted to talk to the specialist.  They told us we would meet the Dr. and get a level 2 ultrasound.

Yesterday we met with the specialist & we had a very detailed ultrasound.  The doctor was very nice, and covered everything with us.  She told us that our initial blood results gave us a 1 in 30 chance for having a baby with Down Syndrome.  We first thought those odds aren't that bad.  Then, she told us that a normal woman my age has odds somewhere around 1 in 850.  I can't remember the exact number because there was a lot going on in my head at that moment.  During the ultrasound they look for "soft markers" for Down Syndrome.  We found out that our baby has 3 of 7 soft markers.  The first marker showed that our baby is missing the nose bridge bone.  The second marker showed that our baby is missing a bone in it's pinkie finger.  The third marker happens in 3-4% of normal babies and is a bright spot on our babies heart.  The bright spot isn't anything to worry about but it's a common marker in Down Syndrome babies.

Profile of Baby Ollie 10-4-10

Our next option was to get an amnio for a yes / no answer.  With this came a risk of 1 in 500 that she could break my water, causing us to lose the baby.  To Jade & I this isn't worth the risk to have a yes / no answer to if our baby has Downs.  Down Syndrome isn't what we wished for our child, but it's definitely something that we can handle if it is God's plan for our family.  We will have to wait until we meet our baby to know if our baby has Downs.  Our Dr. said she highly suspects that he or she does have Downs & we are OK with this news.

The bad news came after all of the talk above.  Right now there is an opening between our babies two ventricles.  We go back in 3 weeks for another ultrasound of the heart to see if the hole is still there or if it grows shut.  Today I'm 20 weeks 2 days pregnant & around 22 weeks is the best time to really look over the heart in an ultrasound.  Right now we don't know what will happen.  If our baby still has a hole in his or her heart, that means we most likely will deliver at a hospital much larger than Champaign - I'm guessing that means St. Louis, Chicago, or Indy and surgery of some sort.

So right now I'm calling on all of you for prayers.  I pray that God does heal our baby before we meet so none of my fears come to reality.  Of all things I hate to tell my other two children any bad news about the baby they are so excited for.  So please pray hard for our family, and put us on any prayer chains you are a part of. I realize that our babies heart may not heal itself before we meet.  In that case I also want to pray in advance for all the doctors and nurses that we may meet, and for our family during this time.

Jade & I are doing OK.  We have each other to lean on, and we're very thankful that we have the marriage that we do.  God has blessed us beyond measures in that respect.  We also have amazing parents to stand by our sides, two beautiful and healthy babies we adore, and a huge support system with close family and wonderful friends.  My parents personally know the heartache and every emotion we are feeling, and that helps to know that someone that loves you so much knows exactly what you are feeling without even talking about it.

Thank you all in advance for all the prayers & support!  After our next appointment with the specialist we will update you.

Jade & Annie

*Added 10-6-10 -  There have been some stories swirling town that our baby will not make it until birth.  This is 100% not true.  Our doctor has not once said these words to us.  As of now our doctor led us to believe that our baby may need heart surgery.  However, this will be determined at our next appointment & detailed ultrasound, and probably closely monitored the rest of my pregnancy.  Right now this is what she suspects based on our last ultrasound*

*Added 10-7-10 - WOW - I am speechless.  The prayers and support from people I have never met is overwhelming.  My husband and I can tell your prayers ARE working.  We are doing well & are very excited to meet Ollie in the future.  With your prayers we are finding encouragement in other websites & resources - thank you all for the prayers & your time you spending thinking of us!*

  1. Prayers being sent and will continue to be sent.

  2. Praying for you! This is a link to the blog of a dear friend of mine. Her story sounds quite similar to yours. Eliana does have Down Syndrome and she did require heart surgery but she's a happy beautiful joyful little girl. I am sure Leslie would be willing to talk to you if you have any questions.

  3. Oh sweet Annie- i'm adding you to my daily prayers- i have about 3 friends with high risk pregnancies that i pray all day for.
i know that you would be a wonderful family for a Down syndrome darling- you are such a strong loving woman.
praying so fervently that baby's heart will heal fully & quickly.
    love you!

  4. Hi,

I'm Sheri's friend. I have a precious little girl with Down syndrome. She was also born with 2 large holes in her heart which required surgery at 4 months of age. All of this was a surprise to me at her birth.

Today, she is a happy, healthy, delightful little girl! I couldn't imagine our lives without her as she brings much joy and love into our days.

God is with you and I'm thankful you have placed your faith in Him. He is the giver of good things. If you ever want to talk or have questions, please feel free to contact me. Praying now for your family and your precious little one.

  5. Dear Annie,
Your post brought me to tears this morning as I sat reading it. I will pray for your precious little one. I do know that we serve a loving God and though we don't always understand everything we choose to trust Him. Have you been following bowensheart.com? They have the most amazing faith and they have been journaling they journey since Bowen's birth three weeks ago. They have been on a roller coaster ride for sure but God has shown Himself to them in amazing ways.

Please know I am here for you and you can count on my prayers for sure:)

  6. I think you and your family are wonderful! I am praying that everything will turn out fine, I just know it will. If your baby does have Downs, it will still be a lucky baby to have you all as his/her family and you all will be lucky too. I have a cousin with Downs and he is fantastic! God Bless you guys! :-)

  7. Annie you and your precious family are in my thoughts and prayers. I can't find the words to say all the right things, but in case you haven't read this before....now might be the time. http://www.kellehampton.com/p/nellas-birth-story.html

  15. Annie, your entire family and your sweet baby will be in my thoughts and prayers. You are so generous to share your thoughts with so many people. I'm sure you have helped somebody today through your words and that will come back ten-fold to you. Stay strong. Ann

  16. Oh sweet girl, I am praying here in jersey ! I will add you and your precious baby to my Rosary. May the Blessed Mother wrap Her mantle of protection around your baby and whisper in the ear of Her Son, so that yours will be healed.

  17. Praying for you Annie!
I can't imagine--but I know this must be such a hard time emotionally already, and now there is more added into the mix. I have no doubt that your sweet family will be able to handle whatever is thrown at them (by God's grace) and I am thankful that you have eachother. Lot's of love and prayers coming your way.

  18. Annie,

I just want to tell you how I admire you as a woman and a mother. Your strength is inspiring. I have no doubt that your faith will help see you and your family through, and I am praying for your precious little baby. You are such a loving person, and so is your entire family. Ollie is extremely blessed to have such a great family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers!

  19. Our daughter is 18 months old. We found out 3 days after she was born. I truly believe how each family's story unfolds is how it is meant to be. I will be praying for you and your little one to be. Whatever the outcome, he/she will make you proud.

  20. Annie,
I've been thinking about you, Jade, Ollie and the kids almost constantly. You're all in my prayers, girl. Already, your strength and grace is so inspiring. I just know that God is using you, precious Ollie, and your whole family to bless others through all of this.

Ephesians if full of God's promises of strength and understanding, and I thought about you when I read this today. "I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources, He will give you mighty inner strength through his Holy Spirit." Eph. 3:16.

  21. Annie,

I can offer nothing but my prayers and encouragement as you and Jade struggle through this. I will be hoping and praying for healing for your new little one, comfort and strength for you and Jade, and peace and unity for your family as a whole. Someone once told me that everything we go through, God uses to position us for purpose. I have no idea what the purpose of this child's life is, but know that you are all in God's hands and you are loved by many. I am so encouraged by your optimism and soft and willing heart to conquer anything that comes your way.

    Much love,

    - Lauren xoxo

  22. Dear Annie,

my thoughts and prayers are with you.
God's ways are inscrutable, dear. I'm sure there is a purpose of the life of this child.

    Love, Inge

  23. Annie --

You are such a strong woman to be so positive about what you're going through! I stumbled upon your blog yesterday and my heart goes out to you and your family in more ways than you can know! Your situation is something I've never had to deal with myself, but I can't imagine what must be going through your mind. The fact that you're so strong and optimistic about everything is truly inspiring. Please know that you have so many people rooting for you that you haven't even met! Sending so much love, encouragement and positivity your way! Thanks for being an inspiration to us all and making us realize just how precious life is!

  27. Dear friends, from way out here in Los Angeles via the "Love Bomb" e-group, I'm praying for a healthy child for you. If Sarah Palin can be an inspiration to you with her Downs Syndrome child, let her be that to you.

I hope and pray in Yeshua Jesus' name that the hole in your child's heart will disappear and be filled with His love, and your medical bills will be handled so well, that they will never be a burden to you!

Be blessed, continue to have hope, and know that you are LOVED from afar!

  28. Dear Jade and Annie,

My heart is with you guys right now, I hope so much that your baby will be born healthy and happy. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys<33

    Much love, Angie <3

  29. Annie,

I offer you prayers for strength, I know this can be terribly difficult, the good news is this surgery is almost as common as a nose job! Not that it will alleviate your fears but I hope it will give you some comfort. I pray all goes well and you will look back on this and laugh at the near miss and useless worry you had, when you give birth to a healthy baby. God bless!

  30. Dear Annie & Jade:

May you and your family be well, have love, health, healing, and wholeness of heart, of body, of mind, of spirit. May you be filled with faith, love, and acceptance and always find the strength you need to handle whatever the outcome of this pregnancy may be. Sending you love and prayers for a healthy, happy, wonderful child.

  31. Many blessings to you and your family! My wife and I lost a son due to a VSD (hole in his heart) some years ago, and our hearts go out to you during this time.

  32. Annie, you and your family's determination, love and faith are so moving. I know that this baby will be well-nurtured and loved, regardless of what happens physically. My thoughts and energies are going towards you and your family during this difficult time!

Keep trusting and loving your family, including your unborn baby. Whatever lies ahead, you can handle it and your little one will add more joy to your life, no matter what. Know that you are not alone, you are loved, and prayers for health, comfort and peace are being sent to you and your family.

  36. Annie and Jade!

  41. You two are so strong, its unbelievable. I'm going to be praying for the baby, I hope he/she is born healthy and happy <3

Love to you both, stay strong ♥

  42. Dear Annie,

You and your family are beautiful. Your love is beautiful; your trust is beautiful. I will be praying for overwhelming grace. In the church in which I grew up, I saw one "almost certainly DS" baby born without, and I've seen DS children as loving and loved members of our "church family." As a "miracle baby" myself, I know I need to always remind myself not to underestimate our loving Heavenly Father. This is today's collect in the Book of Common Prayer; I hope you find it as beautiful as I do:

Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

  43. Dear Annie,

I just wanted to let you know that I'm praying for your baby and for your family. I pray for healing and strength for the baby. I love you guys and hope for the best.

Lots of love and a huge hug!

  44. Sending prayers from southern california for your wonderful family.

  45. I just came across your blog today, and the thought of what you're going through right now breaks my heart. I pray for a miracle of healing in your little one, and I pray that God will wrap Himself so tight around your family that it will feel like a permanent hug.

    With love xx

  46. dear annie--know that you are not alone and that support is all around you. lean on your loved ones and you will find the strength.

  47. I wish I could give you guys a huge hug. In the absence of that, I'm sending you a virtual one! My thoughts, love and prayers are with you and your family.

I know that God wouldn't give this special child to just anyone, so He obviously knows that your strength and courage will be the best nurturing this baby could have.

Bless you and your family as you embark on this unexpected journey. Please know that you are supported in spirit, and that you are all treasured.

You have a beautiful family xxx

  48. we don't know each other but i want to wish you hope, love and strength. you have a beautiful family : ) i will keep you in my prayers.

  49. Annie,

Praying for you and your family - asking that Jesus comfort and strengthen you as only He can. Remember, He does not call the qualified - He qualifies those He calls.

    Go BIG (Believing in God)-

  50. You are so brave and yes, this is God's plan for your family and everything will be wonderful and I know you will love your little girl more than anything in the whole world.

Best wishes from Rockford - If I come down to Champaign for school next year, I want to meet this beautiful little girl!

  51. Annie -

May God's grace and peace be with you and your family at this time in your lives. No matter what happens with the dear, sweet child in your womb, God will be with you and your family. He will bless you in so many ways and work everything out for the good.

Lots of love to you and your entire family.

  52. Sending big puggie hugs and loving healing vibes your way...your strength is an inspiration.
    xoxo ali

  53. Annie,

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be praying for you and your family and your new little baby. My little brother has Downs Syndrome (I say little, but he's 25 now!) and having him as a part of my life has been one of my biggest blessings. We also know a Downs girl in my church who had the heart problems you're describing and she also just turned 25, has a job, graduated from high school, and lives a full, productive life. There will be storms but I know you know that God will use it all as blessings! Keep trusting in Him and know that there are people praying for you and loving you!

    ~Megan :)

  54. Annie-

My heart aches for you. And that precious little one you're carrying. My prayers are with you and your family for the strength and knowledge to walk this path. You're so unbelievable strong and beautiful.

  55. I hope you and every single member of your family (including the precious one you're carrying) live happy and healthy lives.

  56. Kaelah a member of itstartswith.us shared the news of your precious miracle that you are carrying. When I was in college I read 'Angel Unaware' written by Dale Evans (Rogers) - Roy Rogers wife. They had a down-syndrome baby. I don't recommend the read for you at this time, but just wanted to share that it opened my eyes to the fact that God only chooses very special people to bless with these very special children. You and Jade must be the cream of the crop. I know that your heart must ache for yourself, but mostly for your unborn blessing... even though I know you trust greatly in our God... because in the end, you are only human with a tender heart. Just know that you will be in my thoughts even though we don't know each other - you are amazing and your faith is inspiring. Lewelen

    Psalm 139:13-18
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous - how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!

  57. I am praying so much for your sweet family and little one on the way. The Lord is protecting this sweet baby of yours, and is tenderly caring for baby!

  58. Sending your lots of love and hugs and peace.

  59. I do not have a religion , but am sending all my love and best wishes. Your little boy will be another blessing to you and your family.

    My face may be different

    But my feelings the same

    I laugh and I cry

And I take pride in my gains

I was sent here among you

    To teach you to love

    As God in the heavens

    Looks down from above

    To Him I'm no different

    His love knows no bounds

    It's those here among you

    In cities and towns

    That judge me by standards

    That man has imparted

    But this family I've chosen

    Will help me get started

For I'm one of the children

    So special and few

    That came here to learn

    The same lessons as you

    That love is acceptance

It must come from the heart

We all have the same purpose

    Though not the same start

    The Lord gave me life

    To live and embrace

And I'll do it as you do

    But at my own pace

    -author unknown

  60. You have been blessed with a child that needs extra love. You were chosen for this. He/she will change you in ways you never dreamed-and you will love those changes.

  61. what an example of faith and grace you are! i'll be holding your family close in my heart and prayers as the Lord guides you thru the coming weeks until you hold your babe firmly in your arms!
    Psalm 139:13-18

  62. I am praying for your sweet little angel. I don't know if anyone has suggested the "enjoying the small things" blog by kelly hamptom but its amazing! She always makes my day bright. Her little Nella is adorable.

  63. Please check out this blog:

If you go back a few months, you will see the determination this mama has from the moment she saw her child (who has Down Syndrome).

She is an inspiration. Her blog details so much of her thoughts and feelings. I also believe she is open to talking to other mama's who just need to talk to someone who "knows".

  64. You have a bunch of love and positive energy coming from me and my family to you. You are faced with some difficult challenges. Please know that you are not alone in this world and that you have so much more support than you've ever dreamed!

  65. Dear Annie,

Your story is so touching. I pray for strength and peace of mind for you and your family during this time of uncertainty. Sometimes our words to God are the only things that have the ability to calm those anxious butterflies when we're faced with not knowing.

My prayers and positive thoughts are with you and your family.

    Serenity Prayer
    God grant me the serenity
    to accept the things I cannot change;
    courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

    Living one day at a time;
    Enjoying one moment at a time;
    Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
    as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
    if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
    and supremely happy with Him
    Forever in the next.

  66. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers

  67. I will be praying for your family, Annie. God will provide the proper doctors, hospitals and nursing staff to bring this new awesome addition into your family. God does not give us beyond what we can bear, so you must be a very strong and courageous woman! Congratulations on your baby and I hope that reading these comments give you a breath of fresh air and confidence that everything happens for a reason.

  68. I just offered a prayer for peace and sovereignty for you and your family during this time. May you feel His love and comfort.

  69. Sending so much love and many, many prayers your way. I watched a video of a speech from Gianna Jessen, an abortion survivor with cerebral palsy, not long ago. She said some things that really stuck with me, and I want to share them with you.

"There are things that you will only be able to learn by the weakest among us. What arrogance that the stronger should dominate the weaker. Don't you realize that you cannot make your own heart beat?... I am weaker than most of you, but this is my sermon. And what a small price to pay to be able to blaze through the world as I do & offer hope. I think in our misunderstanding of how things work, we misunderstand how beautiful suffering can be. I don't willingly sign up for it. But when it comes, we forget that God is in control, and God has a way of making the most miserable thing beautiful."

    Stay faithful. He's in control.

  70. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. (((hugs)))

  71. dear annie, you don't know me. i will keep you and your family in my prayers. you and jade are incredible parents, which is why of all the billions of people on the planet, god chose the two of you as this special childs parents. whether this child has downs syndrome, a defective heart or is perfectly normal, this pregnancy, and this child, is a gift. stay strong, both of you, and don't let anything ever affect your marriage. above all, know that there are so many people praying for all of you. your attitude is incredible.

  72. Thinking of you and your beautiful family and praying that you all find peace.

  73. I'm sending all kinds of good thoughts and prayers your way, hun. <3

  74. My prayers are with you and your family.

  75. What incredible faith you have! Praying to the ultimate healer on your families behalf.

  76. Hope everything turns out well for you and your family! Keeping all of you in my prayers. :)

  77. Hi Annie,
I can only imagine what you're going through and please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Take one day at a time and rest on your Faith as your support right now. God will know what to do. In the meantime, I'll be thinking of you!

  78. Dear Annie! Sending you all love and prayers! Will place you on the prayer tree!
It feels like something beautiful is happening!!!

  79. Saying a prayer for you!

Your strength and optimism is inspiring!

  80. Dear Annie,
I've come across your blog and felt sad at first as I read your last post. But later on when I browsed your other posts I got amazed by the story and life of the two of you. Even just a few-minute reading was enough. You both are so loving, beautiful and just TRUE people that whatever's coming your way will only make you stronger and will teach you something new about this life. I understand your worries but it's wonderful to see you being strong, positive and optimistic about the future! There are so many stories that I've heard about when the doctors guaranteed something to their patients and then were surprised by "miracles" that happened. There IS what we call "miracle" in this life. I'm being honest, even just reading your story I felt you're living in this miracle. I believe you're right about seeing what it brings. There are some things we can plan, and others that we just have to embrace. God gives us just as much as we can bear, to let us discover something new and deep about this life. Be it sad or happy things, I'm sure you are wise and sensitive enough to perceive the hidden meaning of them. I'm wishing you that same strength, wisdom and beauty that you already have! Everything that happens, happens the best way for us. It's that sometimes we don't know what we really need at the moment. I know that one day you will look back and smile.
    May you all be blessed!

  81. Your strength is amazing. Your children are beautiful. Praying for you all during this time!

  82. Annie,

My prayers are with you and your family. Know that there is a community of people thinking of you and that your baby is already truly blessed to have wonderful parents in you both. Sending you love and positive thoughts-

  83. As a mom who is 20 weeks pregnant with baby #2 my heart goes out to you. I pray for peace in your heart and strenth in your body and faith as you continue to carry this miracle.

  84. I can't even IMAGINE dealing with something like this and I am so impressed with your positivity and love! Keep that chin up, keep that beautiful positive momentum!

  85. My HUGE HUGE prayers are sent your way. God is with you and your family always.

  86. Hang in there!

My wife and I went through some of what you are going through with our daughter. Fortunately, everything turned out OK and we have a happy healthy 6 month old now. I know that the wait between tests can seem like forever and there are times you can’t help but worry. Just try to think about the day you will get to hold your baby in your arms, and it will all be OK.

I’ll keep you in my prayers,

  87. Annie,
Just wanted to offer my support and let you know that you, your baby, your family and any medical staff you encounter are all in my prayers.

  88. For me to read about the amount of faith you have is more inspiring than anything I've read recently. I know that you will love and care for all of the beautiful children that you have and I wish you the best with all of the challenges that you encounter. Remember, not that you'll forget- you are not alone.

  89. What a lucky baby to be born into such a strong, loving and supportive family!

How brave and strong you are. Holding you all in light xx

  90. My prayers are with you, and whatever happens with your child I'm sure that it will be alright. I know a little boy with Down’s syndrome - and he had heart issues as well - he's always smiling, I think he's the happiest baby I've ever seen - and I've seen some babies in my days...

    Keep believing

  91. Annie,
I am sending you all my love and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, knowing that everything happens for a reason. You are a beautiful, courageous human being.

  92. Praise God for technology! Remember, He's got you in the palm of His hand.

  93. What a beautiful family you have, so many blessings, and your family will always be beautiful I am sure no matter what challenges you face.

  94. Annie...my thoughts, prayers, hopes and love are all being sent your way! I hope you and your family get some great news and come out of this stronger than ever before.

    Yours Truly

  95. I wish you and you family luck! Whatever happens is meant to happen. Take care!

  96. Jade and Annie,
Our 7 year old daughter was born with two holes in her heart and she was missing a chamber. At 18 months she had her first surgery. At 3 she received her second surgery to correct scar tissue under her aeorta and correct her leaking mitral valve. At 6 she had her third surgery to again correct her leaking mitral valve. Please know it is a scary road that we must travel but with modern day medical science and technology it's a blessing to know that CHD babies have a chance to live a completely normal life. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you at this difficult time of your journey.

  97. Annie,
Rest assured that there are a great number of people who care and that we will be praying for a positive outcome for you and your family!
    Much love,

  98. Annie and family, I don't know what else can be said that has not already been. I wish you the best of luck in your pregnancy and pray that everything works out for you (according to God's plan)....we only need to trust HIM....

  99. To Jade and Annie- May you be wrapped in grace and love throughout the pregnancy and birth of your little angel. I wish good thoughts, good news and good dreams for you all. Stay strong in faith and love!

  100. sending love and positivity your way <3 i hope more than anything that none of your fears are realized and that baby comes out healthy and happy <3

  101. My prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family. Thank you for having the courage to share this with us all.

Sending you love from Milwaukee <3

  102. No matter what happens God will be with you. He never gives you more than you can handle. I am praying for you.

  103. Annie,

Praying for you and your family. Your baby is so lucky to have such a great support system. God would never give you guys something you couldn't handle and it amazes me to see that you guys are keeping so strong through this! Love and prayers to all of you!

  104. Annie,
You and your sweet family are in my prayers. God has set this ahead for a beautiful reason, even though it doesn't make sense at the moment. He will keep you strong no matter what the outcome is. You all are in my heart and prayers.
    With love,
    Jeremiah 29:11

  105. Bruce Carroll Sometimes Miracles Hide:

They were so excited it was coming to be, two people so in love
and now soon there would be three, for many years they planned it.
Now soon it would be true, She was picking out the pink clothes, he was
    looking at the blue.
The call came unexpected the doctor had bad news, Some tests came back
and things weren't right, said you're gonna have to choose,
"I'll wait a week for your decision" and then the words cut like a
    knife ,
"I'm sure everyone will understand if you want to end its life".
Though they were badly shaken they just had no choice,
Because they knew God creates no accidents and they were sure they
    heard His voice Sayin'.
sometimes miracles hide, and God will wrap some blessings in disguise
and you may have to wait this lifetime
to see the reasons with your eyes, cause sometimes miracles hide
It seemed before they knew it the appointed day arrived,
with eager apprehension they could barely hold inside,
The first time they laid eyes on her confirmed the doctors fears
but they held onto God promise they were sure they both could hear.
Though she was not like the other girls they thought she was the best,
and through all the years of struggle neither whispered one regret.
And the first day that she started school and took her first bus ride,
they'd remembered the words that God had spoke and they both broke down
    and cried.
You see to them it did not matter why some things in life take place,
cause they just knew the joy they felt when they'd look into her face.
They learned that sometimes miracles hide,
they said God Has wrapped our blessing in disguise and
we may have to wait this lifetime to see the reasons with our eyes,
we know sometimes miracles hide. We've learned sometimes miracles

  106. We're praying for your family. You are not alone - Congenital Heart Defects affect 1 in every 100 children. I would suggest starting with this site: http://www.savinglittlehearts.com/

Keep strong. Your baby needs it.

  107. Annie - may you and your family be blessed with much strength and love. I'll be praying for the safe, healthy arrival of your baby :)

  108. Prayers and love to you all, your baby will be a blessing to the whole world!

  109. 'Before us is a future all unknown, a path untrod;
Beside us is a friend well loved and known-
    That friend is God.' Anon
My prayers are with you. Ann

  110. Stay strong! My sister was born with a hole in her heart, as a premature 6month old baby who weighed one pound exactly. She fought and we all fought and she is here now with us, healthy and well. You seem like a strong person which a great support system. You can get through this. All will be well.

  111. I will keep your family and your sweet baby in my thoughts. You both seem to have a lot of love in your family, and it is amazing what love will carry you through. Hug to you, my dear. - love bomber Peliroo.

  112. I know a family who has a little girl. She's much younger than her brother and sister, so I guess you could say she was a bit of a surprise. Yet, she brings more joy to everyone who knows her than anyone else I know. She also has Down's Syndrome.

I have no doubt in my mind that your little one will be a beautiful blessing that you won't be able to imagine your world without. Down's Syndrome or not.

You and your family are in my prayers.

  113. Dear Annie -
It is always scary news to hear that something might be different about your baby, or that their life might even be in danger, but I believe that God has given you the strength to deal with whatever he hands you in life. I pray that the hole in your baby's heart will close and that he or she will be born a happy child. I know they the child will be love weather or not he or she has Down's Syndrome, and that's all a baby could ask from. I will keep you all in my prayers <3

  114. Hi Annie....sending you and your family good vibes. I'd suggest reading "Expecting Adam" by Martha Beck. Wonderful author, great book on what she went through when she learned she was carrying a baby with Downs Syndrome.

    LJB :)

  115. Hey Annie I am Igor, from Brazil. Here we are, across the ocean, sending wishes of streght and good luck to all your family and your comming baby.

I am the mother of'princess Nat' What Hannah refers to in her blog. She has Down Syndrome. Praying for healing for your baby.
Natalie does bring an awful lot of happiness to our family and loves life. She's 9 years old now and is beginning to read quite well.
    Love and Prayers

  117. Positive thoughts and prayers are being sent your way from my family to yours.
Life paths have lots of curves so you can see more of the forest and all of its mysteries.

  118. I deeply respect your strength and I'm praying for your new little baby.

  119. Annie and Jade,

  121. Your family and your little tiny baby will be in my prayers! you're so strong and your faith will guide you :)

  122. Thinking of you and your family and sending love and prayers your way.

  123. Hello!

I just wanted to let you know that we are thinking about you and praying for your sweet little one. Our son was born with a VSD as well as Transposition of the Great Arteries and a trivial ASD. He had his first open heart surgery at 9 days old. You can read the rest of our story at www.caringbridge.org/visit/ethankyle

I also wanted to let you know about another family who has a daughter who was born with a heart defect as well as Downs. Their CB site is http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/leilatatum and they have a family blog (the link is on their CB page). Ironically, the mom and I went to high school together- she was a grade ahead of me. What a small world- I was posting about our diagnosis on FB one day and a mutual friend told me about their situation. I hope it gives you some comfort and hope!

Please let us know if there's anything we can do.

    Amy, Dillon and Ethan Durham

  124. Stay strong! We will pray for you and hope that all goes well and the hole will get fixed :)

  125. God is good and hasn't forgotten about you or taken His eyes off you in all this. "The Lord will fight for you and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest" (Exodus 14:14). Don't you worry about a thing. You just rest in the knowledge that God will use even this for His glory. He has great plans for you and for your precious Baby...plans to give you a HOPE and a FUTURE (Jeremiah 29:11).
    Much love and faithful prayers.

  126. Pregnancy is scary enough, without the added worry. Please know there are lots of people thinking of you, the baby and your family. I have several friends with Downs babies, several more with serious health issues. Doctors are amazing and so are all the families I know who have to deal with these sorts of problems. You are one of the good ones.

  127. Dear Annie,

I am sending much positive light and thoughts your way. And I think your perspective is wonderful and your faith outstanding. I know someone awhile back who was in a somewhat similar situation and I will say that their, who has DS as well, is an absolute joy to be around and always bring so much love to those around him.

  128. I'm praying for you and your baby, everything will turn out for the best no matter the outcome.

  129. Stay strong, you wonderful woman, and put all your trust in God. I'm praying for you, your family and your dear baby tonight.

  130. I'm so sorry for what you're going through right now. It must be so heartbreaking.

  131. Dear Annie, Jade & family,

I just want to say that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. God has His plan for all of us, even though it often surprises us! I pray that He will give you so much strength and bless you in every way.

    With love,

    Laura xxx

  132. You and your family and your baby are in my thoughts and prayers.

  133. Annie,

always remember that this is YOUR little baby, who grows inside your womb, and you are one, and you will remain one after birth - you will always love this little being, regardless whether it is completely healthy or not. You'll go through this together, and that is the greatest of all things.
Keep your courage and strength and never let yourself be parted from your little baby as being an "object" by anyone, medical establishment or other. You'll manage together, I just know.

I will think of you these days.

    All the best,

  134. Annie,
Hold fast to your faith that the Lord will provide for all of your needs. You are in our thoughts and prayers!

  135. I can't imagine the feelings and thoughts you may be having.
I hope you find the love and strength you & your family needs through this rough time in your lives together.

  136. "Blessed is the [wo]man who perseveres under trial, because when [s]he has stood the test, [s]he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him." - James 1:12

Stay strong - your beautiful and faithful family is in my prayers!

  137. Sending prayers and love from Ohio! Reading your story did not break my heart - it inspired me! Many parents would be terrified and upset at the situation. But the two of you are approaching it in such a positive and faithful way. You truly are amazing people and I pray that God continues to bless your family!

You mentioned that you might need to deliver somewhere other than Champaign - is this Champaign IL? If so, perhaps you can consider the Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria - it should be only a few hours from you. I worked very closely with that hospital for several years and it's truly an excellent facility. Great doctors, nurses, staff, facilities. -- Just thought I would mention it!

  138. Your baby is so lucky to have you and your family praying for her/him. I am sure that she/he feels your love and concern. Along with many other people, I am sending your family good wishes. I hope your baby comes into the world healthy and happy. Hugs, Winny

  139. your faith, courage and most of all your strength are so inspiring. i hope that everything will be ok for you and your little one. i have no doubt that no matter what happens, you and your family will make the best loving parents your little one could ever be blessed to have... and that is what counts! take care of yourselves and know that you have so many people out here who are thinking of you and wishing you the best. bless you and your family...

  140. Dear Annie, Jade, and family,
You don't know me, but I'm praying for you. I am so blessed by your faith! What a beautiful family you have, and I pray for blessings upon blessings on all of you. Your baby is so lucky to be born to parents with such strength and love.
    All the best,

  141. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and your family. Trust in God, and he will keep you strong.

  142. I really admire your strength and compassion so much. You and your family will be in my thoughts <3

  143. God Bless, and good luck. I wouldn't trade my Downs sister for the world! It's a great blessing, and God obviously thinks highly of you, if he's going to send you a special child.

  144. Jade and Annie,
you have my prayers for not only a healthy pregnancy and birth, but for strength, peace and joy for your whole family. God has a plan. You obviously know that. He will not fail you now.

  145. My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family, love light & blessings xo

  146. Annie,

You will be in my thoughts and prayers, and I sincerely hope that things go well for your baby.

  147. Annie,
you and your family are amazing and filled with such courage. Your story inspires me immensely! I am praying that your child is born healthy and heart is completely healed. It does take a special family to handle down syndrome - so God must hold you in high esteem and trusts your strength. May you continue to be blessed. Know that many people are praying for you as am I.
Thank you for so honestly sharing your story. With love,
    Vickie F

  148. Hi Annie,

Like others, I also stumbled over your blog today. It did touch my heart . I can only imagine how hard it is for your family right now, especially you because you are carrying the baby.
My brother's first son (my first nephew) was born June 05 this year and we all didn't know he had down syndrome until about a few days after he was born and it really was hard for us. They didn't detect it in my sis in laws pregnancy & to top it off he had to have surgery on his kidneys a week later. It was hard, but honestly, I love him to death! After all this, I wouldn't want him any other way.
I think God only gives those special children to people he knows that will love him. I can just take one look at your family photo and see so much love and care.

I am praying for you and your family and of course your little one. Hang in there and always have hope.

    much love xo

  149. I have always been amazed by the parents of any of the down syndrome children that I know. I think it is indescribable that God trusts you enough to send this child of his to you. He must know that he can trust you for the best care.
Good luck in your adventures with this sweet child.

  150. Whoever wrote the above comment must be in a very terrible place. You are such a wonderfully caring mother, and so brave to be willing to accept God's will, no matter the hardships. I will pray that your baby arrives without complications, but also that if it does arrive with Downs Syndrome or heart problems that God will give you the strength to handle it. They say that God only gives special children to special parents. I believe it. I wish all the best for your family in this crazy whirlwind pregnancy. Ollie, we already know, will turn out to be a fabulous child, and in time, a fabulous adult, all because of his excellent, nuturing parents.

    from Toronto, Canada

  151. Hmmm, the comment I talked about seems to have disappeared. I think you understand which one I was talking about though.

  152. In the past I have worked as a childcare provider in both after-school programs and alternative education/instruction and I have worked with many children with disabilities, such as Down's syndrome, and their families.

I know it can be a sometimes rocky/stressful adventure but in the long run will ultimately be an amazing and heartwarming experience for both you, as parents, and your children.

    All best wishes- to you.

  153. Despite what hardships may come, you're a brave, inspiring woman. Sending good vibes your way :)

  154. so sorry to hear your story :( you are in my thoughts.

i love that family portrait of you all! and you have a cute pug :)

  155. Annie,

What an inspiration your response to the news that your baby may have Downs Syndrome was. The world needs more people like you in it to teach it how to be a better place...

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers

    God Bless!

  156. I only met you twice but I've kept up with you through your blog. What a curve ball you've been thrown! But hold onto Psalms 139:14-16 "14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
    were written in your book
before one of them came to be."

Zac's Uncle Jay and I claimed that when our oldest was born with physical abnormalities. And God hasn't failed us yet! We'll be praying for you!

  157. Annie,

Your family is in my prayers. God has graced you with wonderful children and continues with the new unborn child!

  158. Sending you peace, courage and most of all, love. Know that every single thing you need to face this challenge is within you.

    Lisa in MD

  159. Your strength, courage, and faith are astounding. I know God has a great plan for your family and your new baby. My prayers are with you all.

  160. You and your family are in my prayers. Sending love and light from Tennessee. -Liz C.

  161. You and your family are in my prayers. Sending my love to you and your precious baby from Kentucky.

  162. Annie,

What you and your family are going through is a hard situation. You are a wonderful woman, a great mother, and you are inspiring in your strength. You're in my thoughts and prayers (:

    God Bless,
    Lauren (Ontario, Canada)

  163. First of all, I want you to know that you and your family will be in my prayers!
but you have to trust God, everything he does has a reason, they say kids with down syndrome are such big/warm hearted! and the hole in his/her heart, I think you just gotta be positive and give the baby lots of love to fill that hole! :)
Second thing, I love your blog, I saw some pictures of your house and it's amazing!

  164. Annie.

I'm amazed at your strength. It's hard to take news like this, and I'm just so amazed about how accepting you are. I wish the best for you, your family, and your new child!

Sending plenty of love from Vancouver.

  165. Dear Annie,

I am sending you all my love and prayers and I commend you for your strength and huge love for your children. I too had a son born with a heart condition and he is now a thriving yet tiny ten year old.

    All my love from Australia,

  166. I'm sure your baby will grow up happy and healthy, especially with parents like you and Jade. Keep up hope and smile because of all the wonderful things in your life.

  167. I'm praying for your baby & your family! God has great things planned for you =]

"For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Is. 55:9)
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." (Jer. 29:11)

  168. Downs Syndrome babies have a purpose to create way more love and compassion on our planet. And in many ways they are so much more advanced than the rest of us when it comes to unconditional love... You will be blessed in so many ways for being willing to create this possibility for all who know you... and the many that don't yet!! What are the infinite possibilities of this being the most amazing adventure of your life?

    love, Lisa

  169. Your posotive attitude is truly admirable. Your faith and trust in God is what will carry you through it all. Prayers to you and your family.

  170. You and your family are an inspiration. May you find the love and support you need as your go through this trying time. You will be in my prayers. Sending you warm thoughts and blessings.

  171. You are clearly very loving parents already to your two children, and this new baby is so lucky to have a mom and dad who are so understanding and ready to extend that love to a third child. Best of luck for good news and a healthy progression with this pregnancy.

  172. God is trusting you with a very precious gift and this child will be different but aren't they all! I will keep your family in my prayers that you will be a strong witness to an awesome God who is faithful to provide for our every need.

  173. Just letting you know that your beautiful family are in my thoughts, as well as the thoughts of hundreds of other people. Your kids are lucky to have such courageous and inspiring parents.

  174. I can't honestly pray for you - I don't believe in a God - but I can offer this:

I know that there are thousands of examples of babies who have been born with heart defects, who have received surgery and lived wonderful, full lives. And I fully believe that yours will soon be one of them.

As to the Down Syndrome, I have a story. I went to public middle school, and it was a rough place. There were a lot of fights, and gossiping, and putting people down. But almost every day, all of the "cool" kids (and those quotes only indicate my dislike of the measurement, not it's reality) would make a point of talking to the boy with Down Syndrome in our grade - his name was Alex, and his aide's name was Mike. Alex would always have some alternate activity to do in gym, but those same kids always went to play catch with him. There is a wonderful human kindness in the world. I have faith that however your baby is born, he or she will be loved and cared for, not only by you, but by the world at large.

You and your baby have all my best thoughts and wishes.

  175. I admire your strength and courage in facing the difficult situation. I will be praying for a healthy baby for you and the best for all your family. God bless.

  176. Hey Annie (and Jade and family), I'm praying for you and your family during this time. One of the hardest things in the world is to handle the illness of a child, and to see the measure of grace and dignity you already show is a blessing. I know that no matter what happens, little Ollie will be in loving hands. God's peace upon you all.

    Much love.

  177. I'm new to blogs but NOT new to prayer! God is good and nothing is beyond Him. My prayers are with you and Baby Ollie!

  178. Dear Annie,

Keep strong; my prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family. Down Sydrome diagnoses are often inaccurate, as you said. I was also born with a hole in my heart, and lived with it for several years until it finally closed up on its own. Remember you have your family to lean on, and that they all love you =)

Best of luck for the pregnancy and delivery of a healthy baby. I know Ollie will be in the arms of a loving family.

    All the best,
    Michiko Usagi xxx

  179. Dear Annie,

I know that yours and Jade's strength and courage will carry you both through all this, and there will be a rainbow at the end of this long, dark tunnel.

Lots of love from the other end of the world,

  180. Dear Annie,

Although we don't know each other (and I'm a little later than everyone else =]), I'll be praying for your baby. I hope everything goes well, and God bless!

  181. You are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time. You are such a strong woman and mother already, you'll do beautifully through the rest of this pregnancy, I'm sure. Keep your chin up, think positive and know you're loved and cared for by many. God plans everything for a reason and the plan and purpose will be revealed in time. Stay strong and faithful! You're so amazing!

  182. Thinking of you and your sweet baby. You are strong, Annie, and stay positive! Sending you hugs of support.

  183. Dear Annie, Jade & family.
I will be keeping all of you (and all the doctors and nurses helping you) in my prayers. The faith and love that you have is so beautiful and inspiring. May God continue to bless you all. xx

(I stumbled upon your blog earlier in the year and loved it but then lost it-fate & God has intervened though!)

  184. It takes a strong family for God to give this kind of challenge. It sounds like your family is just the place for this special little spirit. My prayers go out: that you, as a mother, will have increased intuition to know what is best; that your doctors and nurses will have the knowledge and skill necessary and that your tiny baby will be able to grow and develop the way that he or she should.

  185. I have been through a similar situation. I wanted to let you know that he is a healthy wonderful 5 year old. I had a AFP done then and it came back 1:18 for Trisomy 18 (which is non compatible with life). I ended up choosing the amnio because of my anxiety level although we had decided to lay it in God's hands. There would be no way we would terminate and take his life from him. The amnio came back fine. I have never done an AFP test since.

Prayers going out to your family. I hope the next Ultrasound gives you a positive report and the baby will not need surgery.

  186. Miracles happen Annie. Stay strong, we're here for you. Lots of love, Lydia

  187. Be strong! I know you can make it. Whether or not the baby has Down syndrome, it doesn't matter because I know it will be loved and cared for dearly. My prayers are going out to your family, and I hope the the baby will not need any surgery.

    Best wishes,

  188. Annie, you are such an incredible woman. Don't give up and hang in there. Don't loose your faith. You, your baby and your family are in my prayers tonight.
    God bless you.

  189. God has chosen such a special person in you to live this. He has huge hands and a forever caring spirit, esp. when it comes to mommies and their babies. I pray many blessings for you and your family, dear Annie.

  190. Annie,

I will keep you in my prayers. Several years ago I went through a similar situation and my parents had a child (their 6th!) with Downs Syndrome. He is 7 years old now, and is truly a gift and the most loving child I have ever met. I wish you will and will pray for you.

    Best wishes,

  191. I am so sorry for your struggle and while I cannot imagine what you are going through, I am thinking of you and asking God to grant you strength, courage and the ability to keep putting one foot in front of the other. To keep love in your heart, laughter on your lips and a warm embrace in your arms. My hopes and prayers go out to you, your baby, your family and your loved ones.

  192. Annie & Family, you are in my prayers! I can't even imagine what is going through your hearts and minds. I pray that God gives you strength and comfort, peace & joy. I also just wanted to share that as a speech pathologist, working with kids with Down's Syndrome is such a joy. They brighten up my day! As you will find with your beautiful baby. Prayers for healing of your baby's heart!

  193. So sorry for your struggle, but you are in everyone's thoughts and prayers. Some reason you were chosen for this and you'll find strength to get through it.

  194. I am so very sorry to hear about the news you received. I think the amount of comments you have received already goes to show that you are not alone and there are so many people that truly care about you in your time of need. I will keep you and your beautiful family in my thoughts and prayers. Take care! xoxo

  195. Dear Annie, Jade and Family,

I'm praying for you all and for the beautiful little life you are carrying. The waiting time is so hard, and I pray that you can find peace and rest in God. I hope that your hearts can stay open and happy and grateful and faithful. I pray that you're surrounded by wonderful people and that this time nurtures and strengthens your family. I pray that God brings courage and healing and miracles for your family and your little one, and that he walks before you on the road ahead.

You have a beautiful family. God will carry you all through this tough time. God Bless and wishing you all the very best with baby

  196. Thinking of you, your family and the one on the way. I know you must be on a roller-coaster of emotions, but know that you can always come to your blog comments for encouragement and hope.

    Best wishes

  197. Im so sorry for the news that you received. I can't imagine how difficult that must be for your family. Im sending thoughts and prayers your way. Waiting for the news about the heart must be so hard. Stay strong! You seem like such a remarkable family.

  198. Dearest Annie!

I am the oldest [and only girl] with 8 brothers. 4 who were born with autism. 2 high functioning and 2 who will eternally be children. Now I know autism is different then downs syndrome but the fact remains they are both "handicaps" it was hard for my parents when my brother liam was born he was the first with autism, then then carter came and i saw them struggle more, by the time braxton and parker came i thought our family would fall apart with stress but instead we all blossomed with love and joy as we see these beautiful boys endure, explore and grow through their struggles.

no matter what happens you will have a beautiful new child come into your family, and it will be hard, and it will be an adjustment but they will bring so much joy and so much love into your lives and seeing them grow and experiencing a new view of the world through them will open your heart and enhance your life so much more.

i hope your child is born healthy with or without downs. im sure they will be beautiful and will contribute a lot to your lives and to this world!

    love and prayers.

  199. Hi Annie and Jade, i just read your post and my first feeling was empathy for your feelings of worryness and anguish, and the strong determination to pray for your beautiful baby and his awesome family who expect him with so much love. But by the end of your post another feeling came, and it was of intense joy because of your peace and strenght as a family that is grateful and confident even in this moment.
I have faith in you as parents and family, that you´ll be able to overcome with love and joy anything that happens, but i also believe in the power of prayers and good intentions and with love i´ll be praying for you and thinking in you so Ollie be born healthy and perfect as he already is, i´ll pray for his heart to be healed completely and for you to keep on being such a strong and lovely family.
Infinite blessings to you all, always <3

Thank you so much for your kind words & support! I love hearing from you & read each and every comment you leave for me! ~Annie
