When you call someone or something retarded...no matter how unintentional it is - you are belittling my daughter.
So next time you speak the word, type the word, read the word, hear the word - take a stand. Think of Ollie Faith and spread the word to END the word.

PS - I DO know the proper form of the word retard. I don't care. Don't leave me a post about how it has a proper meaning, because let's be honest - you know 99% of people tossing around this word are NOT using the proper meaning. We are spreading the word to end the word because of it's negative, hateful use period.

Amen to that. Word needs to go away. Ann
ReplyDeleteBecause you used that word in your title, I hope you get LOTS of blog hits from people just googling it for whatever reason (title words are pretty powerful in google searches). I hope they come here and read your short, sweet and to-the-point message and learn something from it before they go on about their merry lives using the word and hurting people with it.
ReplyDeleteOllie's beautiful face is still front and center on a poster in my classroom to remind my students of who they are insulting when they use the "R" word. Even then, they slip up and forget, and have to always apologize when I get on their case about it. More and more people are holding others accountable for using the "R" word, and that's the best way to eliminate it from everyday, common, acceptable use! Props for not ignoring the use of offensive language!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful video. I stop people when they say the word.

ReplyDeleteHa, love that pic. That video is a tear jerker!
ReplyDeleteI cringe at that word and I admit I used to say 'That's so retarded' without having a clue. Thank God I know better now!
